The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
modified 20/04/2024 22:44I could not, for the love of god, finish this book. I struggled getting to around half of it, thinking “something must surely happen”, “there’s going to be something, there must be” but nothing happened (hey, maybe it does at the end? I’ll never know). This reminds me of that Bukowski interview where he says that with some of the (modern) books, the authors take so long to build up the book, and when the build-up is finished, when the thing happens, everyone’s just bored because of everything they had to read through to get to it. I felt this way too about The Remains of the Day. I found it dull and boring.
I may revisit this someday, but until then, I’ll be reading books that I find interesting.
